Ready-Made Website: A UK Small Business Buyer’s Guide

A ready-made website is a finished, working website with its own domain name that you buy and take over, instead of paying for a new site to be designed from scratch. For a small business that needs to be online this month rather than next quarter, it can be the quickest and cheapest way to get a professional site, provided you know what you are buying.

This guide explains what you get with a ready-made website, when it beats a custom build, the checks to make before you pay, and how the handover works for a UK .co.uk domain.

What is a ready-made website?

A ready-made website is built for a specific trade or niche before it has an owner. The design, page structure, copy and basic SEO are already done, and the domain name is usually a strong local keyword, for example a horsebox hire site for Essex or a jewellery site aimed at Hatton Garden. When you buy it, the domain is transferred to you, the site is moved onto your hosting and the details are changed to your business name, phone number and photos.

It is different from a template. A template is only a design you still have to fill in. A ready-made website is live, has real pages and content, and often already has some history with Google.

Ready-made website vs a custom build

  • Speed: a ready-made website can be yours within days. A custom site normally takes several weeks from brief to launch.
  • Cost: you pay for work that has already been done, so the price is fixed and known up front.
  • Domain and SEO head start: an aged, keyword-rich domain with indexed pages can reach local search results faster than a brand-new domain.
  • Flexibility: a custom build fits your brand exactly. A ready-made website fits your niche, and then gets your branding on top.

If you need something unusual, such as complex booking rules or integrations with your own systems, a custom website is the better choice. If you run a standard local service and simply need to look professional and be found, a ready-made website is often the smarter buy.

7 checks before you buy a ready-made website

1. Who owns the domain?

Ask who the registrant is and how the domain will be transferred. For .uk domains the transfer is done with a Nominet IPS tag change rather than the transfer code used for .com names. Make sure the domain ends up registered in your name.

2. What exactly is included?

Get a written list: domain, all pages, images, copy, logo files, contact forms and any plugins or licences. You should own the content outright, not rent it.

3. Is the site fast and mobile-friendly?

Open it on your phone. It should load quickly, have a click-to-call button and read comfortably without zooming. Google ranks the mobile version of your site first.

4. Does the domain have a clean history?

Look up the domain on the Wayback Machine to see what it was used for before. A domain that once hosted spam can carry that reputation with it.

5. Is the SEO groundwork done?

Check that each page has its own title and meta description, clear headings, image alt text and a sitemap. These basics are what help a ready-made website appear for local searches.

6. How is the move handled?

Moving a site to new hosting should not break its pages or lose its rankings. Google’s guidance on moving a site explains why redirects and Search Console matter. Ask the seller who does this work and whether it is included in the price.

7. What happens after the handover?

Find out who updates the site, renews the domain and fixes problems. A short period of support after the sale is worth having, especially if you are not technical.

How much does a ready-made website cost?

Prices depend on the niche, the strength of the domain and how much work has gone into the site. The ready-made websites in our shop currently range from £499 £424.15 for a one-page mobile tyre fitting site to £5,000 for a premium jewellery site with a Hatton Garden domain, and all four of our Essex horse websites can be bought together for £3,500. Each listing shows exactly what is included.

Frequently asked questions

Can I change the design of a ready-made website?

Yes. Colours, fonts, photos and text can all be changed to match your brand. Bigger changes to the layout can be quoted separately.

Will a ready-made website rank on Google straight away?

Nobody can promise rankings. A site with a relevant domain and proper SEO foundations gives you a head start over a brand-new site, but results still depend on your competition and on keeping the site active.

Do I need my own hosting?

You can use your own hosting or we can host the site for you. Either way, the domain and the content belong to you.
